“La storia della deportazione e dei campi di concentramento non può essere separata dalla storia delle tirannidi fasciste in Europa: ne rappresenta il fondamento condotto all’estremo, oltre ogni limite della legge morale che è incisa nella coscienza umana”. Con queste parole, un sopravvissuto all’inferno di Auschwitz, Primo Levi, scolpiva, nel 1973, il giudizio sulle radici e sulle responsabilità prime dello sterminio organizzato e programmato ai danni di donne e uomini definiti di razze inferiori, il più grave compiuto nella storia dell’umanità. Il più abominevole dei crimini, per gravità e per dimensione - il genocidio di milioni di persone innocenti - commesso a metà dello scorso secolo nel cuore della civile Europa, dove già da molto tempo gli ideali di libertà, di rispetto dei diritti dell’uomo, di tolleranza, di fratellanza, di democrazia si erano diffusi, e venivano proclamati e largamente praticati. Il senso di incredulità registrato di fronte a quanto accaduto in quegli anni sventurati, accanto al pudore dei sopravvissuti, rinchiusisi, in un primo momento, nel silenzio, traeva la sua origine anche da una concezione ottimistica della Storia e della natura dell’uomo. L’uomo del Novecento - immerso nel tempo della ragione, della fiducia incondizionata nell’avanzamento della scienza, della cultura, della tecnica - mai avrebbe pensato di trovarsi di fronte a un tornante così tragico; mai avrebbe concepito la possibilità di una simile regressione: mentre si confidava – come veniva conclamato - in un’alba radiosa per l’umanità, si trovò improvvisamente precipitato nelle tenebre più fitte. Nel buio più fitto, nella lunga e oscura notte dell’umanità, prendendo a prestito un’immagine di Elie Wiesel, tante piccole fiammelle hanno indicato una strada diversa dall’odio e dalla oppressione. Sono stati i “Giusti”, secondo una terminologia cara al popolo ebraico perseguitato. Persone che, per motivazioni diverse, hanno rischiato la propria vita e talvolta l’hanno perduta per mettere in salvo cittadini ebrei dalla furia omicida nazifascista. Un lungo elenco di nomi, quasi ottocento - come abbiamo ascoltato - quelli finora accertati in Italia, una costellazione di luci e di speranza che continua a rassicurare sul destino dell’umanità. Persone tra le più disparate: donne e uomini, laici e religiosi, partigiani, appartenenti alle forze dell’ordine, funzionari dello Stato, intellettuali, contadini. Accomunati dal coraggio, dalla rivolta contro la crudeltà, dal senso di umanità. I “Giusti” hanno dimostrato, a rischio della propria vita e di quella delle loro famiglie, che il senso di umanità, se rettamente coltivato, resiste in ogni condizione e supera persino i confini del tempo e della morte. Ci hanno insegnato, anche di fronte a tragedie immani, il valore salvifico dei gesti di coraggiosa solidarietà. Perché, per ripetere anch’io questa mattina il celebre detto del Talmud, “chi salva una vita salva il mondo intero.”
